Streptococcus pyogenes (Group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus, GAS) is usually a coloniser of the human oropharynx and skin. However, under specific circumstances, these microorganisms have the hability to cause diverse clinical manifestations ranging from mild diseases such as pharyngo-tonsillitis and erysipelas to severe and invasive diseases such as necrotising fasciitis, pneumonia and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. The goal of this project are the knowledge about GAS pathogenesis and molecular epidemiology of human isolates recovered from differents sites of infections.
