Teacher education in New South Wales, 1980: student teacher survey

The purpose of this survey was to study general characteristics of and views about teacher education of current student teachers. Two further surveys were also conducted within the same study to establish the views of practising teachers and teacher educators on issues related to teacher education [SSDA Study Nos. 193 and 194]. Topics covered include: overall satisfaction with university or college; comparative views on the purpose of schooling; rating of teacher education experience thus far; opinion on ability to find teaching position; emphasis given to specified teaching areas; qualities of the average lecturer at your institution; common complaints about teacher training; time spent on specific learning activities; evaluation of teacher training experience including structure of courses, course content, selection for teacher education courses and appointment to teaching service and induction procedures; supervision of student teachers. Background variables include: sex; age; locality of secondary school attendance; other work experience; other tertiary qualifications; current plans for 1980; fulfilled programme requirements of 1979 academic year; secondary schooling; educational attainment and occupation of parents; marriage and children; main source of income in 1979; ethnicity.
