Ecology field study on the relationship between the diameter of adult trees and the distance to the nearest sapling

Methods: In order to assess the relationship between tree diameter and the distance to the nearest sapling, 10 pairs of adult and sapling trees were sampled. This study was conducted at the Danby Woodlot at York University. Transect measuring tapes were placed at the edge of the woodlot to the centre of the woodlot and the first 10 adult trees (of the same species) encountered were analyzed. Distance to the nearest sapling of the same species was measured and recorded, as well as the diameter at breast height of the adult tree and sapling. The extent of canopy coverage of each adult tree was estimated. Equipment used includes transect measuring tapes, pen and paper. <br>Hypothesis: There is a positive correlation between tree diameter and the distance to the nearest sapling due to competition between neighbouring trees for nutrients and light. <br><br>Predictions: 1. As tree diameter increases, distance to the nearest sapling increases. <br>2. As tree diameter increases, canopy coverage increases. 3. As canopy coverage increases, distance to the nearest sapling increases.
