Ein wichtiger Bestandteil der Cultural Studies ist die Identifikation und die Kritik essentialistischer Begriffe, zu denen auch der Terminus Begabung gezählt werden muss. Zu diesem Zweck wird eine Analyse des Gebrauchs dieses Begriffes in wissenschaftlichen, aber auch in alltäglichen Zusammenhängen vorgenommen. Diese Erschließung des „Diskursfeldes" ermöglicht zunächst einen alternativen Blick auf die Geschichte der Begabungsforschung. Daraus wird ersichtlich, dass die traditionelle Musikauffassung und der traditionelle Begabungsbegriff sich gegenseitig in ihrem kulturellen Wertesystem bestätigen. So wie die westlich-abendländische, tonale Musik als natürlich empfunden wird, erscheint auch Begabung als naturgegebene Anlage für eben diese Musik. In einer kulturwissenschaftlichen Argumentation, die vereinfacht als konsequente Anwendung der Frage „Begabung - wozu eigentlich?" charakterisiert werden kann, wird der Begriff dann aus seinem traditionellen Kontext herausgelöst. Der resultierende semantisch entleerte Begriff von Begabung ist der Ausgangspunkt für eine mögliche Neufassung des Begriffs, um diesen beispielsweise auf den Bereich der populären Musik übertragen zu können.
