Nematocida displodere is a species of microsporidia that naturally infects C. elegans. This species is in the same genus as the previously described microsporidia that infect C. elegans, but has a number of phenotypic differences. These include the proliferation of the pathogen in multiple tissues of the animal and the release of newly formed spores by causing some nematodes to burst. This species along with the other described Nematocida species that specifically infect the intestine provides a powerful model to study the molecular and evolutionary mechanisms of how pathogens evolve to infect different tissues in an animal.
