The Federal Environment Agency operates seven air quality monitoring centres where background pollution, long-distance shipments of air pollutants and trends in air quality are recorded. The report shows the results of the measurements in 2016 and the development of the last 20 years. The limit values for particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide and carbon monoxide as well as for heavy metals and benzo(a)pyrene were complied with at all measuring points. The target value for ozone for the protection of human health was exceeded in Illmitz, at Zöbelboden and at Sonnblick, the one for the protection of vegetation in Illmitz and at Sonnblick. The information threshold was not exceeded at any measuring point. For particulate matter (PM10), sulphur dioxide, carbon monoxide and ozone (except Sonnblick), the lowest level of pollution to date was recorded at all measuring points in 2016.
