Dataset and Analysis Code: Career-stage differences in work expectations, training conditions, and exhaustion among surgeons in Germany

Nationwide online survey (SurveyMonkey®), conducted in Germany between June and September 2024 among board-certified surgeons and surgical residents at 48 departments (university hospitals and Level I–II hospitals across all federal states). The dataset contains de-identified individual-level survey responses (n = 437 raw; n = 379 analytic sample after exclusions), covering work expectations, fulfillment, physical and emotional exhaustion, research attitudes, career goals, and working hours. Accompanying files include a data dictionary/codebook, R analysis code (v4.4.1), and IBM SPSS 29.0 syntax reproducing all reported analyses, sensitivity analyses, and figures. Data collected as part of the study: "Career-stage differences in work expectations, training conditions, and exhaustion among surgeons in Germany" (Current Problems in Surgery, 2025).
