At each subpatch of all patches, we took a soil core with 10 cm depth and 5 cm diameter. It is important to note that we only roughly removed litter and the soil cores include organic and mineral soil together. After sieving the soil at 2 mm, soil samples were dried at 30 °C for 72 h, ground, and then transferred into tin capsules (20 mg each). The analysis was conducted using dry combustion with a VarioEL cube IR elemental analyzer. The C and N content were provided as the percentage of the element's mass relative to the sample mass, and the C:N ratio was calculated from these values.
