Here we studied transcriptome of B. pertussis Tohama I during growth on charcoal agar plates with/without blood and subsequently subcultured in liquid media. We found that B. pertussis Tohama I actively adapts to the presence of blood in the medium leading to global changes in gene expression. Most prominent de-regulation was observed for genes linked to regulatory, metabolic and virulence functions.
