Survey and literature review dataset for: Fresh, salty, and still not talking? Assessing and addressing the limnology-oceanography research divide

This dataset contains the complete raw data supporting the analyses presented in the paper in processing"Fresh, salty, and still not talking? Assessing and addressing the limnology-oceanography research divide" (Díaz-Torres et al., 2026). The dataset includes three Excel files: 1. RivertoOcean_Summary_English.xlsx: Anonymized survey responses from 78 English-speaking aquatic researchers (76% of total respondents) from 27 countries. The survey was conducted between October 2024 and January 2025 and collected information on research backgrounds, collaboration patterns, perceived barriers, and priorities for freshwater-marine interdisciplinary research. 2. RivertoOcean_Summary_Spanish.xlsx: Anonymized survey responses from 25 Spanish-speaking aquatic researchers (24% of total respondents), primarily from Latin America. The Spanish version of the survey enabled inclusion of perspectives often underrepresented in international assessments. 3. l_and_o_lit_review_2015-2025.xlsx: Systematic literature review of 320 papers published in Limnology & Oceanography between 2015-2025 (approximately 17% of all regular issue papers in that period). Each entry includes classification by field (limnology, oceanography, coastal, estuary, both), whether the paper mentions the other field, and whether it demonstrates substantive interdisciplinary engagement (knowledge exchange or land-ocean aquatic continuum research). Together, these datasets provide the empirical foundation for identifying the "collaboration ceiling" between limnology and oceanography communities, revealing that while 49% of papers mention both fields, only 25% demonstrate meaningful interdisciplinary collaboration. The survey was approved by the University of Leeds Faculty of Environment Research Ethics Committee (reference: 1620). All data are anonymized with no personally identifiable information.
