The primary objective of this investigation was to understand the effect of microgravity processing on composition and microstructure evolution in metallic glass forming alloys or bulk metallic glass (BMG). Specific questions to be answered were: (a) How does processing in microgravity change the composition of the matrix of the glass-forming alloys compared to processing in gravity? (b) How does the volume fraction of the W spheres affect the composition and properties of the matrix? (c) How does the composition and viscosity of the glass-forming alloy affect the diffusion of W in microgravity? (d) How do the different diameter of W spheres affect the diffusion of W into the matrix? (e) Does the dissolved W provide a mechanism to improve the wear resistance and toughness of the matrix by providing reinforcement for brittle phases?
