Microbiome of older Caribbean Latino adults

A major contributing factor to type II diabetes (T2D) is deficiency in short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production by the gut microbiome. SCFAs are a by-product of bacteria fermentation of dietary carbohydrates. We conducted an exploratory study to examine dietary quality- including carbohydrate intakes- of Caribbean Latino older adults, with a high prevalence of T2D, and to explore associations between dietary quality, gut microbiome composition, and SCFA production.
