Official U.S. Navy photograph of Midshipman F.A. Brown, a student at the U.S. Naval Academy. The back of the photograph identifies Brown as "Midshipman F.A. Brown 2/c of 1305 'O' Street, N.W. Washington, D.C." Brown is looking at a plaque containing the names of crewmen who died in battle aboard the U.S.S. Randolph. The plaque contains the message "U.S.S. Randolph, Roll of Honor, Men Who DIED IN ACTION for AMERICAN IDEALS and to maintain for us 'A Better Way of Life.' The U.S.S. Randolph was sent to the Pacific in December 1944, where the ship's planes attacked targets as part of the Iwo Jima invasion. On March 11, 1945, a suicide plane hit the ship, killing 25 crewmen. The ship was returned to action in the Pacific during the remainder of World War II, and was later decommissioned in 1948.
