Willian Post Office, Willian, Hertfordshire. Watching Brief (OASIS ID: heritage1-257642)

In response to a planning condition on the redevelopment of land at Willian Post Office, Willian, Herts., the Heritage Network was commissioned by Anglian Country Inns to undertake a programme of archaeological monitoring on the development groundworks. The proposed development entails internal alterations to the Post Office to create eight letting bedrooms and the construction of a car park to serve the proposed bedrooms, centred on TL 22445 30685. The present investigation involved the monitoring of the groundworks for a new fence line and ground reduction across a former grassed area for the new car park. The monitoring of the development groundworks at Willian Post Office, demonstrated a stratigraphic sequence consisting of topsoil, above subsoil, which in turn directly overlay the natural sand. Despite the proximity of the site to areas of known archaeological activity, including a possible medieval manorial site, no evidence relating to this was revealed during the course of the present project.
