A well-resolved decameric water ring was formed in the cryptand−phthalic acid supramolecular adduct of [H6L][(PA)(HPA)]2·(H2O)10, 1·(H2O)10 (PA2- = phthalate anion, L = N[(CH2)2NHCH2(C6H4-p)CH2NH(CH2)2]3N). Formations of eight additional hydrogen bonds between the decameric water ring and the adjacent PA2- and HPA- anions make the water ring stable at room temperature. Structural refinement using low-temperature collected data gave an approximate composition of 1·(H2O)10.67, in which an extra tetrameric water ring was formed and the tetrameric water rings alternately connect the decameric water rings via sharing the apical O(12) atoms to generate a novel one-dimensional water chain.
