We studied variation in the ectomycorrhizal (EcM) fungal communities associating with roots of Fagus sylvatica seedlings and saplings and compared them with soil communities. Fungal DNA was extracted from soil, seedling and sapling roots collected in 187 plots across the beech-dominated Sonian forest (Belgium) and community composition was determined through metabarcoding.
