The Aerosol Haze-Fog Algorithm (AHFA) consists of two components: the fog/low cloud algorithm and the haze detection module, and is capable of providing the Fog Mask (FM) product.
The fog/low cloud algorithm identifies pixels containing fog or low clouds (with cloud base lower than 300 meters). For nighttime detection, it mainly uses the infrared (3.9 µm) and far-infrared (11 µm) channels, while an additional visible (0.65 µm) channel is added for daytime operations. Fog/low cloud pixels primarily conform to the following physical characteristics: liquid water clouds; low cloud base height; weak vertical motion, with uniform spatial distribution of temperature and reflectance
