PITOP

The experimental test site of Piana di Toppo (PITOP), in Italy, owned by OGS, covers an area of approximately 22.000,00 m2 and was designed and developed by OGS with the aim of providing a facility for the study and testing of geophysical methods, new technologies and borehole/surface tools under realistic conditions. Four wells are available in the site (PITOP1, PITOP2, PITOP3, PITOP4). Two wells, PITOP2 and PITOP4, are instrumented with borehole sensors. Auxiliary seismic sources and sensors (i.e. DAS, geophones, load cells) are available both on the surface and downhole. Due to its characteristics, which allow to carry out geophysical measurements in instrumented wells, it represents a unique scientific test site in Italy. The test site is part of the ECCSEL (European Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Laboratories Infrastructure) – ERIC (European Research Infrastructure Consortium) consortium. In the framework of CCUS studies and after involvement in the RAFAEL project in collaboration with UniFe, ENEA, INGV, water and gas monitoring studies are undertaken in the PITOP1 and PITOP3 wells.
