Macroalgal microbiomes are receiving deservedstudy, but there is little information about microbialspatial diversity across the thallus. Reliance on field 4material makes it difficult to discern whetherrecovered microbiomes belong to the host or itsepiphytes, and technical comparisons of macroalgalsamples for microbial studies are needed. Here, weuse a common garden approach that avoids theproblem of epiphytes, particularly at holdfasts, toexamine the microbiome of Porphyra umbilicalis(strain Pum1).
