VPRS 9931 Financial Returns: Power Supply to Melbourne and Geelong and Geelong Tramways

This series comprises Financial Returns (Statements) which are usually published with an annual report, although they may be compiled at more regular intervals. The statement is a summary of the agency's financial situation at a particular point in time. The types of statements and their format are generally determined by legislative requirements and these in turn determine the nature of the accounts required to be maintained.These financial returns were created on a monthly basis by the Melbourne Electric Supply Company (MES Co.). The MES Co. supplied electricity to municipalities in metropolitan Melbourne, all of Geelong and the Geelong tramways from 1900 to 1930. MES Co. sold its electrical undertakings and other interests to the State Electricity Commission of Victoria in 1930.The financial returns are standard statements of expenditure and revenue for each of the areas of MES Companys interest. In accordance with standard accounting practice, all the relevant ledgers for each of MES Companys interests have been summarised in the statements.
