Assessing vulnerability of the Heiltsuk community to sea level rise - combining 3D visualization tools and local knowledge

The Heiltsuk Nation of British Columbia are observing high tides that now reach higher levels than they have previously seen. As a result, there is concern about the effects that future sea level rise could have on a variety of places and landscapes that have cultural, social, spiritual, and economic importance to the community. To prepare for future impacts and to protect the community's land and livelihood, the Heiltsuk need to understand more fully the local effects of future climate-driven changes on cultural and natural resources. The purpose of this project is to assess the vulnerability of the Heiltsuk community to climate change. it will determine future impacts of sea level rise on the coastal territory of the community. It will define which are the most sensitive livelihoods, structures and areas to climate-driven sea level. The collated information will be useful for mapping risks and visualizing vulnerability to sea level rise. Finally, the maps and 3D visualization tools will be useful for integrating adaptation strategies to sea level rise and coastal erosion predictions into community plans.
