Compositions and methods for cleaning wet strength resin contamination from papermaking equipment and/or for preventing wet strength resins from contaminating papermaking equipment using the compositions are disclosed. The compositions comprise an aqueous solution of a weak organic acid; a surfactant， preferably a nonionic surfactant， a divalent metal ion containing catalyst and optionally a glycol ether containing solvent. Compositions and methods for cleaning wet strength resin contamination from papermaking equipment and/or for preventing wet strength resins from contaminating papermaking equipment using the compositions are disclosed.
