<p>This is a national household study employing face-to-face interviews with persons aged 18 and older living in the contiguous United States. The sample contains an oversample of black and young adult respondents. A structured instrument was designed to determine diagnoses of alcohol abuse and dependence over the course of the previous year or over a person’s lifetime; other drug use and associated disorders and incidence of major depression; quantity and patterns of alcohol and other drug use; standard demographics and employment characteristics; patterns of utilizing health care services and barriers to care; and treatment costs and reimbursement. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) sponsored the study, which was conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau.</p>
