Thirty two Nordic Red dairy cows were ranked for feed efficiency based on residual energy intake to represent the lowest (L), middle (M) and the highest (H) third of samples maximizing among group differences. For shotgun-metagenome sequencing 2x150bp libraries were prepared using the NexteraXT DNA Library Preparation Kit (Illumina), and sequencined on the Illumina NovaSeq 6000 platform.
