An investigation of the lower Wellar Coal Measure sequence

The lower Wellar Coal Measure sequence was investigated and extensively sampled. A thin, unusually textured horizon, with the appearance of an ash deposit, was traced along the entire northern side of the central part of the Mt. Fleming ridge, before it disappeared below younger rock. This horizon was analysed by x-ray analysis and found to be almost pure analcime. It suggests a rare and probably distal Permian volcanic ash episode.
