This study investigates the bacterial communities of gastrointestinal organs within two deep-sea species of Schizasterid heart urchins. Specifically we are focusing on understanding the diversity of bacteria that live in a novel organ called the intestinal caecum in these urchins. This work is the first to characterize this novel organ and to attempt to understand this role bacteria play in the life of these animals.
