Sociocultural factors in the spread of environmental misinformation in the Arauco Province, Chile - 2022

This dataset contains the anonymized survey results used in the study “Sociocultural factors in the spread of environmental misinformation: Evidence from Arauco Province, Chile.” The survey instrument was adapted from the work of João Baptista (2021) and colleagues at Universidade Beira Interior (Portugal), who originally developed a tool to assess the public’s ability to distinguish between fake and real news. Building on that foundation, this research designed a two-part instrument focused on environmental misinformation. In the first section, participants evaluated the credibility of five environmental news items—four true and one false—and indicated their willingness to share each. In the second section, respondents provided demographic and sociocultural information to allow for the construction of political and cultural profiles. The dataset includes anonymized responses in SPSS-compatible format and may be used to replicate analyses from the paper or to support further research on misinformation, media trust, and sociocultural dynamics in Latin American contexts.
