The objective of our study was to evaluate the diversity of indigenous microorganisms and its abundance in an area with long-term impacts from contamination with crude oil. We have reported on the isolation and characterization of the individuals of this microflora and its potential to degrade crude oil. Another objective was to obtain a collection of hydrocarbon degrading fungi and bacteria potentially exploitable for soil and water bioremediation.
