Olkiluoto Island is a 10 km2 island on the western coast of Finland (61°14′13′′N 21°26′27′′E). Since the late 1980s, almost 60 deep drillholes have been drilled on the island for research and monitoring purposes. Complete geochemistry, geophysics and gas concentrations have been monitored and data is available for comparison. 12 deep groundwater samples (depths 300m to 1000m) have been sampled during 2010-2012. We propose that the microbial community composition of archaea and bacteria would be characterized by their V6 region using the Illumina platform. The community composition will be connected to the geology and hydrogeochemistry of the sampling environment. We will compare the Illumina V6 results to the 454 V1-V3 region for bacteria and the V3-V4 for archaea. Our previous results show that specific microbial groups dominate in groundwater fractures at specific depths, which is also mirrored in the hydrogeochemistry.
