The temporal change of phenotypes during the adaptive process remain largely unexplored, as do the genetic changes that affect these phenotypic changes. In this study we explored the phenotypic effects of beneficial mutations that appeared during an experiment in which the bacterium Escherichia coli was evolved 2000 generations at high temperature. We showed that mutations in a transcriptional regulator, which were fixed early during an evolution experiment, lead to numerous changes in gene expression that favor adaptation to high temperature.
