The geochemistry and microbial communities of Cinder Pool in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA were investigated 1) to examine the potential for subsurface hydrothermal biospheres in YNP and 2) to investigate coupled subsurface geobiological changes associated with the acidification of the spring between 2018 and 2019. Samples were collected from a vertical depth profile in Cinder Pool (at 0, 9, and 15 m) in 2016 and again in 2020 for geochemical and microbial characterization.
