Valvular intersitital cells cultured as spheroids undergo apoptosis and subsequent calcification. Antioxidants reduces the apoptosis and calcification to varying extents suggesting that the most effective antioxidant, ascorbic acid, plays additional roles e.g., inducing ECM deposition.
