The chitin utilization mechanisms of Chitinibacter sp. SCUT-21

To determine how SCUT-21 utilizes chitin as the sole nitrogen and carbon source, the isolate was cultured in basal medium (0.4% glucose, 0.4% yeast extract, 0.4% peptone, and inorganic salts) for 16 h until it reached the logarithmic growth period. Bacteria were then transferred to new basal or chitin medium (1% crystal chitin powder substituting all organic components in basal medium) and cultured for 36 h and a comparative transcriptomic study via RNA-Seq was conducted.
