The microbial link between periodontitis and IBD - Gut microbial community.

Extra-intestinal manifestations such as periodontal inflammation in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) have been documented. Yet, the microbial association between oral and gut compartment contributing to clinical outcomes of IBD has not explored. Here, we collected total 103 saliva and 103 stool samples from 42 (19 perio- and 23 perio+) of ulcerative colitis patients, 16 (6 perio- and 10 perio+) of Crohn's disease patients, and 45 (24 perio- and 21 perio+) of non-IBD healthy control subjects and conducted 16S Illumina MiSeq anlaysis with primers specific to the V4 region.
