Dataset Description Overview This dataset contains example imagery and data on analysed simulation outputs from the FOCCUS WP9 MS9.1 Applications prototype: ESC1-1.2.2 - Coastal erosion dynamics assessment of the German North Sea. The prototype application used GCOAST-GB to investigate nature-based solutions (NbS) for reducing coastal erosion risk. Simulations were carried out in the German Bight using a regional, unstructured-grid hydrodynamic, wave and sediment model. GCOAST-GB Setup for German Bight Underlying simulations were conducted using a coupled modeling approach integrating the hydrodynamic model SCHISM (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ocemod.2016.05.002), the wave model WWM, the sediment transport model SED3D and a vegetation module that accouns for the effect of vegetation on hydro and wave dynamics, all coupled within the SCHISM framework(ccrm.vims.edu/schismweb/). The used grid configuration for the two studies areas are as follows: German Bight: The grid setup follows Jacob et al. (2023) [DOI: 10.1007/s10236-023-01577-5]. The model area consists of 476 k nodes and 932 k triangular and quadrangular elements, with the horizontal resolution, varying between a maximum of 1.5 km at the open boundary and a minimum of 50 m in the estuaries. The vertical dimension is resolved using 21 terrain-following sigma coordinates. Data Structure The fodlers and files encompass Top-level folders and files CNTRL/NetCDF outputs for the control scenario (no vegetation / baseline). SCENARIO/NetCDF outputs for the vegetation scenario (with NbS intervention). grid/Unstructured model grid files (hgrid.gr3, hgrid.ll, vgrid.in) and parameterization (param.nml). all three contained within SCENARIO.zip plots (.png)Pre-computed figures illustrating attenuation effects and erosion risk reduction. code NbS_erosion_impact_plots.py: Script to create the png files based of the provided netCDF files schism.py: Python library to read Schism grid files. environment.yaml conda environment list with the needed packages to run the codes The CNTRL/ & SCENARIO/ folders each encompass the netCDF files: File name Description Unit / Content bottomStress_quantile95_1.nc 95th percentile of combined bottom stress Pa sigWaveHeight_quantile95_1.nc 95th percentile of significant wave height m totalSuspendedLoad_quantile95_bottom_1.nc 95th percentile of near-bottom suspended sediment concentration kg/m³ CriticalBottomStressRatio.nc Erosion risk index, categorized: 0 = No risk, 1 = Low, 2 = Increased, 3 = High Risk index (0–3)
