Parkes observations for project P791 semester 2013OCTS

Radio emission has been detected from only four magnetars (all discovered\r\nat Parkes). This emission is transient and highly variable, and appears\r\nto share other characteristics (e.g., flat radio spectra) that distinguish\r\nit from the emission of ordinary rotation-powered pulsars. However, there\r\nis clearly some relation between the radio emission of ordinary pulsars\r\nand that sometimes displayed by these magnetically-powered neutron stars.\r\nStudying this radiation provides a new opportunity to learn more about\r\nboth neutron star radio emission mechanisms and magnetars. We are\r\nlimited, however, by the knowledge of only four objects in the class.\r\nSeveral more X-ray magnetars are known, however, a few discovered only\r\nin the past few years. We aim to search for radio emission from the\r\n11 magnetars visible from Parkes that are not currently known to emit\r\nradio waves. For this purpose, we request 4.5 hr of telescope time once\r\nper semester.
