Chemically mediated floral volatile signals for pollinator attraction often involve numerous compound classes and unique blends. In this study on a food deceptive orchid (Caladenia denticulata), we combined i. comparative transcriptomics between putative active (sepal tips and labellum) and non-active (remains) flower tissues, ii. floral volatile headspace profiling, iii. phylogenetic analysis of a multigene family, and iv. protein functional assays to investigate the molecular mechanisms underpinning plant specialized metabolites implicated in their insect (e.g. hoverflies, small wasps, and native bees) pollinator attraction.
