Forest Damage Assessment Following Storm Kristin in Central Portugal (2026-01-27)

In the final days of January 2026, Storm Kristin affected central Portugal, causing significant damage in forested and rural areas, including widespread tree uprooting and damage to roads and rural tracks. Following the event, the Instituto da Conservação da Natureza e das Florestas (ICNF), through the Portuguese civil protection authorities, requested support for a geospatial assessment to delineate wind-damaged forest areas and identify roads obstructed by fallen trees. The assessment was intended to support recovery planning, road-clearing operations, biomass management and preparedness ahead of the fire season.
