Genomic DNA from the pygmy hippopotamus was combined with genome sequences for the river hippopotamus and various cetaceans to search for skin genes that have been inactivated in both hippopotamids and cetaceans. Ten different skin genes have been inactivated in both hippopotamids and cetaceans, but none of these genes were inactivated in the common ancestor of these two groups.
