Return on equity (ROE) of the banking system in Italy 2007-2023

The annual return on equity (ROE) of the banking system in Italy fluctuated significantly throughout the period from 2007 to 2022. In 2020, due to the economic contraction caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the ROE of the industry dropped significantly. It increased sharply in the following years, reaching to 13.2 percent in 2023, the highest since 2007.
