A halophilic aerobic denitrifying bacterium was isolated and screened from activated sludge treating tannery wastewater, identified as Marinobacter sp. and named GH-1. This strain exhibits highly efficient aerobic denitrification capability and maintains high activity within a salinity range of 3% to 9%. Based on whole-genome data analysis, the strain possesses complete denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA) pathways, as well as complete genes encoding Na+/K+ ion transport proteins and proteins involved in the synthesis of betaine, ectoine, and proline. It can balance osmotic pressure by accumulating inorganic ions and compatible solutes. Through fed-batch cultivation, the strain was added as microbial activated sludge to a treatment system for saline fly ash washing wastewater, resulting in improvements of 31.92%, 25.19%, and 31.8% in the removal rates of nitrate nitrogen, total nitrogen, and COD, respectively. Microbial community structure analysis revealed that strain GH-1 successfully proliferated and enhanced the denitrification capacity of the system.
