NorLag shall provide knowledge about the variation and change in social participation, health and life quality through life by studying behavior and transitions in four central stages of life: (1) Work and retirement, (2) Family and generation, (3) Mastering and life quality, (4) Health and care.

NorLag is a longitudinal panel study based on a stratified and random sample of the population, in the age 40-79 years, in 30 municipalities and districts all over the country, with continuous observations each fifth year. The local foundation makes it possible to integrate individual level data from interviews and questionnaires with data from the municipalities and local knowledge from key informants. The longitudinal design makes it possible to investigate ageing and role transitions such as processes that spans over time.
