PAL_TUS_1999_HD_V1 Time Use Survey, TUS 1999-2000 Other Household Survey [hh/oth] The Time Use Survey of 1999/2000 was carried out by PCBS for the first time, twelve years after the implementation of the first survey, a second survey was implemented in 2012/2013 to examine the changes that have occurred to life in Palestinian society. Time use surveys are crucial instruments in social science research that provide valuable insights into how individuals allocate their time across various activities. These surveys systematically capture and quantify the amount of time people spend on diverse pursuits, such as work, leisure, household chores, and personal care. The data collected through time use surveys offer researchers a comprehensive understanding of societal trends, patterns, and dynamics, shedding light on evolving social structures, economic activities, and cultural practices. By examining how individuals distribute their time, researchers can discern patterns related to gender roles, socioeconomic disparities, and lifestyle changes. Time use surveys also play a pivotal role in informing public policy and program development, guiding decisions on issues ranging from labor market regulations to family support systems. Furthermore, these surveys contribute to the advancement of our understanding of human behavior and well-being, offering a nuanced perspective on the complexities of modern life and its impact on individuals and societies. As such, time use surveys are indispensable tools for scholars, policymakers, and social scientists alike, fostering a deeper comprehension of the intricate interplay between time allocation and various socio-economic factors. The Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics had carried out this survey for the first time during the period May 8th 1999-May 7th 2000, i.e. one complete calendar year including various seasons, ceremonies and feasts. By repeating this survey, the comparative survey data will enable the researchers to identify the changes in the social structure, along with the changes in women status and participation in the developmental process. Sample survey data [ssd] 1- Individual/person. V1: A cleaned and a harmonized version of the survey dataset, produced by the Economic Research Forum for dissemination. 2025-01 All documentation available for the original survey provided by the Statistical Agency, and for the harmonized datasets produced by the Economic Research Forum, are published, along with a copy of all occupations and economic activities used during the harmonization process. However, as far as the datasets are concerned, the Economic Research Forum produces and releases only the harmonized versions in both SPSS and STATA formats. Household: Includes geographical characteristics, household composition, LFS classification of household head, dwelling characteristics and ownership of durables. Individual: Includes only demographics characteristics. Selected Individuals: Includes demographics, education, current labor status, and the detailed time use module. Governorate (16 governorates in west bank and Gaza strip) Locality type (urban, rural, camps) The survey covered all Palestinian households who are a usual residence of the Palestinian Territory. The target population of the Time Use Survey consists of all individuals in the age group 10 years and over who are usually resident in the Palestinian Territory. The sampling frame is comprised of a comprehensive sample selected from the 1997 Population, Housing and Establishments Census. This comprehensive sample consists of geographically approximate areas (in terms of number of households0, namely the enumeration areas used in the 1997 Census. The enumeration areas were used as primary sampling units in the first stage of the sampling process. The sample size for this survey consists of 8038 individuals selected from 4019 households. The sample of the Time Use Survey is a multistage stratified cluster random sample. The first stage involved the selection of a stratified random sample comprised of 240 enumeration areas. The second stage involved the selection of an average of 17 households in every selected enumeration area. The third stage involved the random selection of two household members, one male and one female in the age group 10 years and above. The selection of household members from the households selected in the field is done by using random (KISH) tables. Levels of stratification were made: 1- Stratification by governorates 2- Stratification by place of residence which comprises: a. Urban b. Rural c. Refugee Camps 3- Stratification by classifying localities excluding governorate capitals, three strata based on levels of ownership of durable goods in households within selected localities 4- Stratification by size of locality (number of households) The response rate in the survey in Palestine was 96% , with significant difference between WEst Bank and Gaza, in West Bank it was 94.7% and 98.3% in Gaza strip. Weights have been calculated in a way which takes into account compensation for incomplete cases that occurred during data collection, in addition to the distribution of population by areas, sex and age structure according to the population estimates for 1999. For more information about weights' calculation please refer to the report in the documentation. The Time Use Survey Questionnaires consists of three main sections: Household Questionnaire: The questionnaire involves the identification data and the household members' records. It also contains the demographic and economic background characteristics for the household members, in addition to data on household properties and levels of income. Individual (10 years and above) Questionnaire: The questionnaire is related to the randomly selected individuals to complete this time record. It involves data on the educational and employment status of the individual in addition to information about cultural status. Daily Record Questionnaire: It involves data on the activities of the individuals and the time spent in rendering those activities. In the adopted record, the day was divided into temporal intervals varying form 15 minutes during the day and 30 minutes after midnight until 6:00 in the morning. For information about data processing and weights' calculation please refer to the report in the documentation. Licensed datasets, accessible under conditions.
