The Museums Victoria Petrology data package includes records for rock and ore specimens in Victoria’s State collections for which suitable identifications and spatial coordinates are available. The collection includes over 16,000 registered specimens and has a particular focus on representing Victorian regional and economic geology, as well as examples of significant rocks and ores throughout Australia and the world. Developed since 1854, many specimens in the collection are from localities and mineral deposits that are no longer accessible. The collection includes many specimens that were formerly parts of the Industrial and Technological Museum (Melbourne), the University of Melbourne and the Geological Survey of Victoria collections. Specimens in Victoria’s State collections are available for research use: follow the archive link on AusGeochem or email us directly at askus@museum.vic.gov.au for more information.
The data package is updated monthly with new records, additional descriptive information and corrections. Use of data in this package is allowed with acknowledgement of its source. Museums Victoria registration numbers should be used in full when referring to individual specimens.
