This study used mitochondrially-mapped RNA sequence data to compare mitochondrial transcription in female and hermaphrodite individuals. This is the first comphrehensive study of mt transcription in a wild cytonuclear gynodioecious system lacking a known male-sterility gene. Analyses identified largely conserved mt expression, with the exception of a non-coding RNA, found to be transcribed and edited only in female individuals.
