Lunar eclipse luminosity and derived stratospheric aerosol optical depth (SAOD), 1750–2022

This dataset provides a continuous time series of lunar eclipse luminosity and derived stratospheric aerosol optical depth (SAOD) for the period 1750–2022. It updates and complements earlier compilations, incorporating newly identified sources and a consistent reassessment of historical observations. The assessment was conducted by Lucas Boissel (Université Paris Cité) and Sébastien Guillet (University of Geneva) and is based on several hundred archival sources, including astronomical manuscripts, newspapers, scientific and amateur journals, and photographic material for the most recent period. The dataset is explicitly provided to support CMIP7 community assessments, particularly for the evaluation and intercomparison of new reconstructions of stratospheric aerosol optical depth and volcanic forcing.
