Non-white and peripheral teachers: history of teaching in Brazil

ABSTRACT This is a study on teaching in Brazil under a historical perspective. Based on ethnicity, class, gender, and territory, we analyze the trajectory of teachers in Brazil from the middle of the 19th century to the first decades of the 20th century. We used official documents, newspapers, and photographs as main sources. Theoretical contributions from social history and social history of education grounded the analysis. We concluded that these analytical categories must be included in teaching research, favoring non-white and peripheral teachers who represent a significant part of teachers in Brazil.
