Data related to the development of a nasal spray for the local delivery of the new strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum BIA

This dataset contains data collected in the research activities concerning the development of a mucoadhesive nasal spray containing the new strain Lactiplantibacillus plantarum BIA. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum BIA was isolated from orange peels and taxonomically identified by sequencing the 16S rRNA gene. Its ability to inhibit various pathogens, such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus pyogenes, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus was demonstrated as well as its anti-inflammatory properties. The strain was then formulated as a freeze-dried matrix to be reconstituted in a hydroxypropyl methylcellulose solution. Reconstitution medium was selected among different polymer solutions based on properties like pH, viscosity and mucoadhesiveness. BIA viability in its dried and reconstituted form was assessed for up to 3 months and 1 week, respectively, and the final formulation was evaluated for its mucoadhesive properties, antimicrobial activity against the tested pathogens and anti-inflammatory potential.
