NRS-19487 | Register of works approved

The series consists of volumes of registers of railway works approved. The format of the registers includes date, relevant reference numbers, name of the nearest station or other location, particulars of the work carried out (e.g. drainage, repairs to shop, improvements to signals), date of approval, various details relating to costs, and remarks. Some volumes also include records of specific major works (e.g. electrification of suburban railways) in the back of the volume, and these may cover date ranges outside of those in the main section.The 1908-1910 volume includes an index with the main register. From 1910 onwards the volumes have corresponding Indexes of Works approved, where the works are indexed by location. These can be found in NRS 19488.Custody HistoryFrom 1955 until 2000 the State Rail Authority of New South Wales maintained an 'in house archives' consisting of the archival records of the Authority, its predecessor agencies and the private railway companies taken over by the government. The date ranges of the records were from 1849 until 2000. When the decision was made to close the 'State Rail Archives' the parts of the collection that were required as State archives were transferred to the State Records Authority of NSW. Those record series were incorporated into the State Records series system of archives control and were re-numbered.This series was formerly part of the State Rail Archives collection where it was identified as part of series R398 (the remainder of R398 is now in NRS 19488 and NRS 19489). It may have been viewed in the State Rail Archives as series R398 and could have been previously cited as such in notes by researchers at State Rail Archives or in publications or unpublished works.
