Field Observations on Water Systems after the February 2023 Kahramanmaras Earthquakes (Mw 7.7, Mw 7.6)

This study documents the effects of the February 6th, 2023 Mw 7.7 and Mw 7.6 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes on water systems across four provinces in Turkey, including Kahramanmaraş, Adıyaman, Gaziantep, and Hatay. Approximately 14 million people were affected, necessitating large-scale efforts to restore water and wastewater services. Data was collected through multiple field reconnaissance visits and meetings with local officials, focusing on damage to critical water infrastructure. The study illustrates various types of failures induced by geohazards such as ground shaking, fault displacements, landslides, and liquefaction. Specific examples of pipeline failures are highlighted, with varied cases of disruption encountered in the aftermath of the earthquakes.
